The second smallest Canadian province, Nova Scotia offers a treasure trove of outdoor activities, wonderful dining opportunities, museums, and numerous music and theatre venues. Nova Scotia is almost entirely surrounded by water, and hidden little coves, streams, and harbors dot the landscape. The interior of the island is full of national parks and pristine forests that call to all those interested in hiking, backpacking, and nature study. A day's itinerary can include fishing, swimming, scuba diving, surfing, bicycling, canoeing, kayaking, river rafting, whale and bird watching, and that's just for starters! Nova Scotia is east of New Brunswick, Canada and northeast of Maine, U.S.

Mahone Bay is a 55 minute drive south from Halifax and is recognized as one of the most beautiful spots in the world, or drive to visit Chester, Lunenburg, Petite Rivere, only a short drive from the cottage.

The provincial capital, Halifax, outwardly shows a modern face, but its inside is filled with an historic heart. It is a bustling city that has a long affiliation with the sea. A great place to start is in Halifax Harbor. The second largest natural harbor in the world (after Sydney, Australia), the harbor is the pulse that beats the city, bringing tourists and sea farers by the thousands. To more fully understand the importance of the sea in Halifax's history, visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. The museum houses a collection of nautical memorabilia including a display of shipwrecks off of Nova Scotia, Queen Victoria's barge, various historic small craft, and a continuously running film by National Geographic about the RMS Titanic, which sunk off the coast of Nova Scotia in 1912. (Incidentally, some of the victims of the Titanic rest in Fairview, Olivett, and Baron de Hirsch cemeteries, their graves commemorated with small black headstones). History buffs will want to make a beeline for the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, the most visited historical site in Canada. The Citadel sits atop a hill on George Street, and offers a great view of the town and the harbor below. In summer, students dressed in period uniform portray soldiers of the 78th Highlanders and the Royal Artillery. They demonstrate military drills, the changing of the guard, and weaponry presentation. There is also a 50-minute audiovisual presentation on the fort's history.
